Description:: A particularly picturesque part of Colmar is called Petite Venise, or Small Venice. The buildings here are beautifully restored half-timbered houses along the channeled River Ill. I found the name a bit odd as the place doesn’t resemble Venice at all and even if you count in the few gondolas plying their trade on the river, you need more than one channel to justify the name “Venice” in my book. The area is, however, beautiful to explore (and duly packed with tourists from all nations).
