Description:
Saalburg, just to the north of Bad Homburg near Frankfurt am Main, is a reconstructed Roman fort. It was part of the Roman Limes Line that separated the Roman Empire from “barbarian” Germany. It ran from near Koblenz on the Rhine to near Kelheim on the Danube and is the longest site on the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage list. The present construction resembles that from around AD200 when around 3,000 Romans lived here. The outside walls measures 150 by 220 m (490 by 722 feet) with the main assembly hall an impressive 39 by 12 m (127 by 39 feet). In addition to the exhibitions on Roman-German history, demonstrations and lectures are held on summer Sundays. A small restaurant serves hearty food made from original Roman recipes. Numerous hiking routes are available in the surrounding forest.
