Description
Heidelberg is famous for its university and it castle ruins. The town was the capital of the Palatinate Electorate for half a millennium but after the French destroyed the town and castle in 1688, 1689, and 1693, the town was left with no buildings from the Middle Ages. The old town here is therefore much newer than in many similar German cities and shows conformity in style. The castle was left in ruins after the French moved through but some of it has been restored by Romantics during the 19th century – not necessarily true to the original. Most impressive is the Renaissance palace that faces the Neckar River. Almost nothing remained from the once spectacular gardens.
