Fray Antonio Margil de Jesús built this mission in 1720. In Texas, it is known as the Queen of the Missions. For, as Fray Juan Agustín Morfí wrote in his journal, "...in point of beauty, plan, and strength...there is not a presidio along the entire frontier line that can compare with it."Mission San José y San Miguel de Aguayo is still an active Roman Catholic parish of the Archdiocese of San Antonio. The Most Holy Sacrifice of the Mass is offered on Saturdays at 5:30pm and on Sundays at 7:30am, 9:00am, 10:30am, and 12:00pm.
